Support for children with Specific Educational Needs (SEND)

Support for SEND Children at APF Activity Camps

At APF Activity Camps, we are deeply committed to ensuring that every child, regardless of their individual needs, has an enriching and memorable experience. Our inclusive approach and expert team make our camps a place where children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) can fully participate, grow, and thrive.

WHO WE SUPPORT

We welcome children with a diverse range of abilities and specific educational needs, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to participate, thrive, and enjoy our camps in an inclusive and supportive environment.

Our programmes are designed to accommodate:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) – We create structured, predictable environments with clear routines to help children feel comfortable and engaged.
  • ADHD or other attention-related challenges – Our activities include movement breaks, clear instructions, and engaging tasks to help children maintain focus and participation.
  • Speech and language delays – We use visual aids, gestures, and structured interactions to encourage communication and social engagement.
  • Social, emotional, or behavioral challenges – Our staff is trained to provide positive reinforcement, emotional regulation strategies, and structured social opportunities to build confidence and self-esteem.
  • Physical disabilities requiring additional support – We ensure that all activities are accessible, providing adapted equipment and assistance where needed to promote full participation.

One-to-One Support
For children who require additional assistance, we offer one-to-one support to help them actively participate and enjoy all aspects of our camps. This ensures that every child feels valued and included in the activities we provide.

Small Group Support
In addition to one-to-one support, we also provide small group support for children who benefit from a more structured and focused environment. These sessions foster social interaction, build confidence, and encourage skill development in a supportive setting.

Our team is committed to fostering an environment where every child feels valued, supported, and encouraged to develop their skills while having fun.

We offer a variety of sports, including football, dodgeball, cricket, and more, designed to encourage physical activity, teamwork, and fun. These activities help SEND children develop motor skills, improve coordination, and build confidence in a structured and supportive setting. By engaging in team sports, children also learn important social skills such as cooperation, turn-taking, and communication, which can enhance their ability to interact positively with peers.

From go-karts and bouncy castles to sumo suits and soft-archery, our extreme activities provide high-energy fun in a safe and controlled environment. For SEND children, these activities help develop spatial awareness, balance, and body coordination while allowing them to explore movement in an exciting and engaging way. Our trained staff ensure that adaptations are available so every child can participate, fostering inclusivity and boosting self-esteem.

Painting, drawing, and other hands-on artistic activities provide children with an opportunity to express themselves freely. For SEND children, creative activities offer a valuable outlet for self-expression, emotional regulation, and sensory exploration. Engaging in arts and crafts can also help develop fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and problem-solving abilities in a relaxed and encouraging atmosphere.

Through nature-based games and outdoor adventures, children can build confidence, resilience, and a deeper connection with the natural world. For SEND children, outdoor exploration offers sensory-rich experiences that stimulate curiosity and encourage self-discovery. Activities such as scavenger hunts, bug spotting, and nature walks provide structured opportunities for social interaction while promoting physical and emotional well-being.

Designed for children who benefit from sensory play, these activities create a calming and engaging experience. Sensory activities support children with ASD, ADHD, and other needs by helping to regulate emotions, improve focus, and enhance fine and gross motor skills. We incorporate a range of textures, sounds, and movement-based activities to ensure every child can find an approach that suits their needs and provides a sense of comfort and enjoyment.

We incorporate engaging team challenges that develop social skills, promote collaboration, and build resilience. These problem-solving activities are particularly beneficial for SEND children, as they encourage communication, patience, and positive peer interactions in a structured and supportive environment. By working together to complete challenges, children gain confidence in their abilities, develop friendships, and learn valuable life skills in an enjoyable and stress-free way.

Creating a Safe and Supportive Environment

  • We understand that every child’s needs are unique, and we encourage open conversations to assess whether our setting is the right fit. Our priority is to maintain a safe, enjoyable, and inclusive experience for all children in our care.

While we strive to accommodate a wide range of needs, there are certain situations where we may be unlikely to provide support, as they pose significant challenges to the safety and well-being of all participants:

  • Aggressive or physically harmful behaviors – Due to safety concerns, we may not be able to support children who display frequent aggression or behaviors that put themselves or others at risk.
  • Non-toilet-trained children – Unfortunately, we are unable to provide personal care support for children who are not toilet trained.
  • Tendency to abscond (run away) – If a child has a history of absconding, we may not be able to ensure their safety within our camp environment.
